I make light sculptures and light installations using a variety of different electric lights that celebrate light, creating poetic forms to transform spaces and create positive, colourful, and uplifting ambiences. Studying for a Fine Arts degree in Bristol in the late 1970s I found by using electric light my sculptures transformed the gallery spaces with radiant energy. During a gap year travelling I visited Las Vegas and saw the potential of neon to create luminous cities of light. On my return home I decided to learn how to make neon. I spent several years aquiring scientific glass blowing skills and working in commercial neon workshops before setting up my own neon studio London in the mid 1980’s, receiving recognition from the Crafts Council. I made neon sculptures and started to attract commissions for larger architectural installations. Over the years I enlarged the range of lights I use to include LEDs, floodlights and fibre-optics. After completing a postgraduate Fine Arts degree at Goldsmiths College UCL in 1992 I moved with my family to my present location in West Cornwall. Living in West Cornwall surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, sunlight is reflected between the sky, sea and land in ever changing beauty. There is a special clarity and intensity of colour and light that is radiant and uplifting. This is the spirit that inspires and I try to reflect in my light sculpture and light installations.
